With 36 years of IBM experience, Mark has built a unique reputation for identifying insurance industry and market trends. As the current Manager of Business Innovation in IBM’s Global Insurance Industry, Mark works primarily with IBM’s insurance clients on their business strategy through innovation, radical cost reduction, Robotics Process Automation (RPA), InsurTech and business and IT maturity models. He is skilled in innovating and collaborating with C-Suite executives to help manage complex transformations, integrating line of business ecosystems and communities, and supporting high performance sales teams.
In his current role, Mark looks across geographies and the breadth of insurance clients in commercial and personal lines, re-insurance, life, and wealth management. Mark’s primary expertise focuses on cost reduction, InsureTech, and Globally Integrated Enterprise (GIE) in insurance where he explores organizational, operational, and cultural transformation. Mark advises insurers who are facing the challenges associated with making data driven decisions while helping them sustain profitable growth. He applies IBM’s vision of addressing domestic and global integration challenges while engaging with clients to create a culture of high performance and continual transformation. Mark inspires insurance executives who are leading the transformation by providing insight on the “art of the possible,” innovation, and growth. In 2017, Mark is leading the RPA and Cognitive Process Transformation enablement for insurance. In addition, Mark counsels the IBM global insurance leadership team with his expertise on key market trends. Additionally, Mark contributes to the quarterly insurance report for the SEC Security Analyst.
In late 2014, Mark was selected to commercialize an insurance asset from IBM Watson Labs in
Tokyo, Japan. The Insurance Process Analyzer (IPA) helps insurers achieve business agility by representing a process visually, highlighting bottlenecks, and identifying talent mismatches. As a result, most Japanese carriers have realized benefits up to 10x ROI. Commercialization includes a partnership with business analytics & strategy, cloud, social, cognitive technologies, and Global Business Consulting Services. Mark is an intrapreneur who is in the process of directly turning IPA idea into a profitable, finished product through assertive risk-taking and innovation.
Prior to his current role, Mark has held various roles in IBM’s Financial Services Sector Americas including: Emerging Business Opportunities – Financial Services Manager; Global Brand Manager for Financial Services; Manager of High Growth Innovation Initiatives; Manager of Business Resilience for Banking and Financial Markets; and Southwest United States NetGen City Manager (Internet Startups and Life Sciences). Additionally, Mark was the Chief Architect in building the Competitive and Emerging Line of Business for IBM.
Mark has Bachelor of Sciences degree in Marketing from San Diego State University. He received certification in competitive strategy and industry analysis at Harvard University, and completed executive programs at Boston University, Wharton Business School, and The Kellogg Graduate School of Management. While attending The Fletcher School of Emerging Business’ Executive Education program, Mark published, “Reflections Project.” Mark is a mentor to emerging professionals establishing career roadmaps in business and STEM.
Mark lives with his wife and daughter in Irvine, California. He enjoys playing golf, hiking, walking, and Stand Up Paddleboarding.
